Since deciding to live a more simple, minimal lifestyle, I’ve had my fair share of trial and error with deciding what’s the perfect amount of material possessions for me and because I thrive off of self-imposed rules and boundaries I’ve created a list of things that no longer serve a purpose for me that I stopped purchasing.
Makeup
One benefit of minimalism is that it reveals what truly matters to you. I’ve always had this belief that I should care as much about makeup as teen girls my age do, but I just simply don’t. I stopped buying products I “should” have and instead purchase products I actually enjoy using. I can now say I enjoy the simplicity of owning less makeup products.
Brand New Clothing
I don’t know if it’s just me but I find that the clothes in my closet that are thrifted are the clothes I wear A LOT. Not only are there good clothes out there ready to find a new home, the prices at thrift stores are unbeatable. I now purchase second hand as often as I can when I’m looking to shake up my wardrobe.
Cheap Jewelry
I used to be a sucker for $3 rings at forever 21, but since adopting a quality of quantity mindset; I quit buying cheap jewelry that would go from gold to pink within the next 2 weeks.
Brand New Books
People that know me probably thinks that this category is BS but I promise it’s not. The same with clothing, I try to opt to either using a library, buying my books second hand, or borrowing from a friend.
Room Decor
I’m that girl that loves changing up her space frequently and I used to think buying brand new room decor was the only way to achieve the feeling of a new space, but that is far from the truth. In place of buying brand new decor, I like to revamp and diy a lot of the decor I already have or I visit my second home (the thrift store). You’d be surprised at how much fun it is to get creative and diy old things or to take time to find some good pieces at a thrift store.
So those are the 5 things I stopped purchasing since pursuing a more minimalist lifestyle and can’t wait to discover new ways to simplify even more on this journey.
