Throughout my years of being vegan, I always get the question of how I did it. How did I, a girl who lives in the south in the middle of nowhere, go vegan?
My process was pretty simple: I went vegetarian immediately after watching “The Best Speech Ever” by Gary Yourosky and gradually cut things out until I was fully vegan, but I’m aware that this process may not be ideal for every one, so I created a guide that can help anyone on their journey to going vegan.
Read or watch “Mistakes to Avoid When Going Vegan”
Six years of being vegan, I’ve observed and witnessed many failed attempts of people trying to go vegan so to help you avoid those missteps, I created a blog post and video form of mistakes to avoid when going vegan you can review.
Have an action plan and set goals
With anything in life you want to achieve, you have to have goals set in place to keep you on track — the same process is helpful when trying to go vegan.
I suggest getting a journal, notes app or a piece of paper you’ll see everyday and write down milestones you would like to hit every week. For example, you may want to completely get rid of pork from your diet by week 3 of your journey or cut out milk by the end of the week. Whatever it is, write it down.
Start small
Some people go completely vegan overnight, but that’s not realistic for everybody so start wherever you can.
Whether that be with “Meatless Mondays” or making one vegan meal twice a week, any step toward your goal is progress.
Create a community that inspires you
It’s easy to stay on track when you surround yourself with like-minded people. Even if it isn’t physically, you can start by following and subscribing to vegan leaders, activists and members that post encouraging content or by watching documentaries on the topic.
The more you get educated and inspired, the easier it’ll become to see the benefits of a vegan lifestyle.
Forgive yourself when you make a mistake
On this journey, you will accidentally slip up either by lack of willpower or ignorance of something that wasn’t vegan and that’s okay.
No one is going to evoke your vegan card because you had a slip up, all that matters is that you keep going and improving. Learn from your mistakes, forgive yourself, and move on.
Note progress, reward yourself, and take all the time you need
It is helpful if you keep tabs on your progress because oftentimes, it may seem that you’re further from your goal than you actually are.
If you want some accountability, post your journey on youtube, tiktok, or instagram, that way you have documentation of your journey and a community that is interested in seeing you reaching your goal.
It is important to remember that going vegan isn’t a race, so take all the time you need and stay focused on the prize — a new, healthy lifestyle.
