When it comes to self-inquiry and getting to know yourself, many people feel that they have to dive deep with reflective, intimate questions. However, sometimes the best way to get to know yourself is by starting with the basics — with simple questions you would ask someone you just met and was getting to know.
As someone who’s journaled for years, it wasn’t until recently that I realized I can quickly answer introspective questions such as why I feel a certain way about a particular incident or what I feel I learned from the past, but it takes me longer to answer a simple question such as what’s my favorite movie and why.
Simple questions can lead to wonderful discoveries about yourself. Although they may appear surface level, they can reveal aspects of yourself you didn’t know about. Below are a few journal prompts to get you started on the path of getting to know you whether it’s your first time journaling or whether you’re a seasoned pro:
- What are your top 3 favorite movies and why? Are you drawn to the cinematography? The actors and actresses? The storyline? The time period? The soundtrack? (If you’re not a big movie person, list your favorite television shows instead).

- What concert do you want to go to in the future? What is one of your favorite concerts you’ve been to?
- What are some of your current hobbies?
