About a month ago, I was at a restaurant with some friends in the bustling streets of London. While we were waiting for our food to arrive, my friend Loletta and I engaged in a discussion about owning less and living simply.
If you know anything about me, you know that I light up when discussing minimalism.
Loletta and I both had the experience of studying abroad and we both acknowledged an epiphany we had while going to foreign countries with only a small suitcase full of things:
- When you own a few select pieces, it’s easier to decide what to wear everyday.
- You limit your purchasing when you have a limit (in our case, we had very limited space in our suitcases, so we were really mindful of trinkets we decided to buy and take home).
- You don’t really need a lot of things to express yourself.
- You can actually live a life with less and be just as happy as someone with more things.
Looking back, I wish I was taking notes as Loletta and I chatted, because the conversation was so refreshing and enlightening.
As a now 22 year old who adopted a “minimalist mindset” at 18 years old, I still find it helpful to engage in how others view simple living because it will inevitably look different for everyone.
Recently, I was inspired to do some decluttering, which I encourage everyone to make the time to do, because, even as a minimalist, I still accumulate things over the years. After simplifying I was reminded that you don’t really need as much as you think you do.
