Self-care is essential to our wellbeing. No one can argue against that fact, but self-care isn’t always easy.
There are going to be times when taking care of ourselves is effortless, and there are going to be days when it’s challenging to just take a shower. Essentially, we require different levels of self-care throughout the many phases of our lives.
This post is for the times when self-care is hard, when life throws a curveball, and the last thing you want to do is implement well-being practices. Here are a few things you can do:
Comparison is irrelevant
There are times when I am completely on top of it — my routines include everything from exercise, eating healthy, waking up early, meditating, and making time for close relationships. However, there are times when I sleep in, lounge around all day (usually scrolling through my socials with no end in sight), and put everything beneficial to my well-being on the back burner.
What I just described is a reality for many of us, and it’s okay to experience both realities interchangeably. However, don’t make the mistake of comparing the times when caring for yourself is manageable, enjoyable even, with the times when it’s tough.
Work with what you have and take steps to feel whole again.
Start with one
In this very moment, what is one thing you can do that makes you feel cared for? Is it taking the time to read a chapter of your favorite book or is it simply getting out of bed and making breakfast?
When you’ve been down and out, it’s important to give yourself a little grace when trying to get back into the groove of things.
10/10/10 guide
Whenever I’m in a rut, I notice that whenever I commit to at least 10 minutes of movement, meditation, and outdoors I feel better than I did before doing those things.
That’s it. Just 10 minutes of those three things whether it be taking a walk around the neighborhood, doing yoga or a quick ab workout, going for a swim, sitting outside while scrolling through Tiktok, dancing around your room, or sitting in silence and observing your surroundings, these things will nourish you in small ways.
If those three things don’t resonate with you, swap them for three things that never fail to make you feel balanced.
I would love to hear your thoughts or any updates with your self-care journey in the comment section!
