When there’s discussions around spiritual awakenings, people usually associate it with some “woo, woo,” fantastical, foreign concept.
Sure, there’s people who project this image and misconception, but a spiritual awakening is simple. The way I see it? It’s just melding spirit, inner self, higher self, soul (whatever you wanna call your essence, your soul) into your life. It’s creating a life where self and soul are intertwined instead of separate. It’s allowing your relationship with essence to influence your reality.
No matter your religion or lack thereof, a spiritual awakening can be beneficial for anyone. By definition a spiritual awakening refers to “a shift in consciousness, an apperception of reality which had been previously unrealized…”.
My first introduction to the spiritual world (other than Christianity) was through author and thought-leader Deepak Chopra. I read his book The Book of Secrets when I was 15 years old (who wouldn’t want to read a book with that title?!). The language he used in the book was so foreign to me that it piqued my curiosity enough to want more, to understand his world.
This led me to reading The Way of the Wizard (also by him) multiple times, The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire (another by him), The Alchemist (by Paulo Coelho), and The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
There were other books that I read in the category of “spirituality” growing up but these are the highlights — the ones that laid the foundation to what would be my journey to a spiritual awakening.
I say all that to say: I didn’t understand just yet what these authors were trying to teach me. I was between the ages of 14-18 when I was invested in the spiritual world, but that didn’t stop me from exploring and making the effort to understand.
I once had a roommate my freshman year of college who was a fan of The Alchemist like I was and she shared how she reads The Alchemist at different stages in her life because different things are revealed every time. I liked that perspective, so I adopted it and started re-reading books such as The Alchemist to try to get the deeper meaning of the author’s messages.
Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic hit, and we were all forced to adjust our lives accordingly. I decided to use the majority of my time diving deep into the spiritual realm, exploring more spiritual-centered books and authors.
And that’s when it finally happened. The awakening.
This post isn’t to discuss said awakening (but if you want a separate post on that, leave a comment!), so here are the books that finally tipped me over the edge into my spiritual awakening:
