It’s the end of another month, which means it’s time to recapture the things that brought some joy to these past few weeks.
Below are the things that made July full of smiles:
Becoming by Michelle Obama
I’m a little late to the party when it comes to this book, but like the saying goes: better late than never.
I remember the monumental moment when the United States elected its first Black president, bringing with it the first Black FLOTUS — Michelle Obama. This was important for many reasons. One being representation matters… a lot, and having Michelle Obama be a dynamic and influential Black woman serving as a role model for little girls that look like me was powerful.
Reading about Michelle’s life both comforted and inspired me, especially reading about the uncertainty she had as a young adult trying to find her footing in adulthood, since I find myself at this phase in my own life.
I admire Michelle’s authenticity, vulnerability, and transparency with telling her story because it truly helped me gain a new perspective.
Crown by CHIKA
I’m a music junkie who loves finding uplifting songs to listen to.
One of my favorite artists, CHIKA, has a song called “CROWN” that has been on repeat. The gospel influence and encouraging lyrics give me the motivation I need to start my morning every day.
If you enjoy affirming songs, check out my playlist “ENERGY: elevate” on Spotify.
Scrapbooking
I wanted a new way to showcase memories from my college experience besides throwing photos in a photo album and calling it a day, so I picked up a scrapbook.
With scrapbooking, I’m able to relive special moments while being creative with how I want to display them.
Family time
During the majority of the year, I’m away from home attending university in California, which means I don’t get to see my family in person that much. So, when I come home for the summer, I feel refreshed when I get to spend quality time with my family home in Mississippi.
Throughout this summer, we were able to go on fun trips such as Universal Studios and have get-togethers with great food and music. Recently, we spent the day at a water park, enjoying the sunshine and exhilarating waterslides.
If you don’t already, take the time to make a list of the things that brought some joy to your July and share a few of them below in the comment section!
