“It’s better to live a short life that is full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way.”
Alan Watts
If you were to ask me to describe my ideal life, it would go something like this: the days are slow paced, but not in a boring sort of way… in an intentional sort of way. I have the time and the freedom to do the things I enjoy such as drinking coffee in a comfy chair as I read a book without worrying about pressing obligations or spending the day indulging myself in a new hobby.
The only pressing matter on the calendar is meeting up with friends later in the day to do a hike or grab some lunch to catch up on our lives.
My job would have something to do with a passion of mine where I have complete control over my schedule (which means 4 day work weeks!).
That’s it. No hustling, no rush, no busyness. Just space, effortlessness and peace.
I used to equate busyness and productivity with a “worth-while” day. If my to-do list wasn’t scheduled to the minute, I felt as if the day was a waste. Unfortunately, a lot of my self-worth came from how much I could do in 24 hours.
This isn’t to say I want to run away from responsibilities and obligations that are tied to living a sustainable life, it’s that I want to rid myself of the unnecessary responsibilities and obligations I attached myself to in order to feel validated.
It wasn’t until recently that I realized I no longer want to rush through my days and measure a successful day by how many things I tick off of my to-do list.
Instead of trying to pack my day full of tasks just to feel accomplished, I want to strive for less things on that list. It’s a quality over quantity approach.
It’s funny how my ideal life changed since I was a young kid making vision boards. I no longer desire a life of rigidly structured days designed to keep up in the rat race of acquiring a life of material riches.
I desire a day filled with creativity, joy and space. One that I’m excited to wake up to every morning. One where I don’t need a vacation from because everyday feels like one.
A simple life is the life I desire.
