Living simply looks different from person to person. What may be too much for me may be just enough for you; what may be enough for me may be insufficient to you. This is actually the beauty of simple living — it’s flexible and can be practiced by anyone.
The purpose of simple living is getting rid of the excess stuff in your life so that you can focus on what matters. In other words, when you get rid of the excess, you make room for what really matters to you.
If making room for what matter to you sounds appealing, but you don’t know where to start, then here a few ways to help you get started:
Be intentional with what you bring into your space
A lot of the time when we go shopping, we don’t think too much about what we’re purchasing and bringing into our spaces. This can lead us to overspending and unnecessary accumulation.
Next time you go shopping, try asking yourself these five questions to determine whether it’s best to bring the item(s) you’re eyeing into your space.
Declutter
It can be satisfying seeing your clutter downsize.
It is important to note that decluttering, especially material possessions, isn’t meant to create room for more material things, it’s meant to make more time for things you value (i.e. the time you would spend in upkeep of your items and cleaning of your space is reduced when you have less things to upkeep and clean, thus creating time for hobbies, passions, and relationships).
Try this 30 minimalism challenge to get started with your decluttering process.
Change your mindset
In order for simple living to become truly beneficial in your life, you have to change your mindset from “more is more” to” less is more.”
This isn’t to say you should aspire and make it a competition to own less things. Rather, you should develop a mindset where you see less as an opportunity to experience more.
My favorite saying is “experiences over material things.” If this saying speaks to you, then having a mindset that allows you to live this out is essential. And from experience, the “less is more” mindset is the way to go.
