Miley Cyrus is undeniably the queen of new eras.
When I had the idea to write about embracing new eras, Miley Cyrus was the first image that came to mind.
If we take a look at this artist’s life, starting with her career as Hannah Montana to now, there’s a “new” person every few years. We had the “country Cyrus,” the “pop Cyrus,” the “boho Cyrus,” the “edgy Cyrus,” the “urban Cyrus” and now the “rock-star Cyrus.”
There’s something we, as individuals, can learn from Cyrus’s willingness to embrace different eras of her life.
At different periods in our lives, we will feel an urge to switch things up — whether that be our clothing, living space, daily routine or even something as mundane as a coffee order. Instead of hesitating when we feel this urge, we should welcome it.
Over the past few months, I’ve been working through old thinking patterns — learning to let go of societal expectations on how I should be — and this process prompted me to evaluate who I am at the core.
When you take the time to learn what you like and who you are as a person, things will naturally want to shift to fit or represent your true being.
In her book “Rainbow in the Cloud” Maya Angelou said, “Try to be so much yourself that the clothes you choose increase your naturalness and grace.”
As a fan of Cyrus, I can safely make the argument that she embodies Angelou’s advice. One can see that every body of work Cyrus has shared, her sound and style accurately represents the era she’s in.
This shows fans she isn’t afraid to experiment and, better yet, isn’t afraid of the criticism she may receive from changing up her image. She flows in and out of phases gracefully and I admire that about her.
I think potential judgement from peers is what holds many of us back from making changes in our lives. Unfortunately, there isn’t some magical pill we can take to be immune to criticism but there is this thing called confidence that everyone could use a bit more of, and the only way to increase confidence is through practice — doing the things that push you out of your comfort zone.
It’s easier said than done (and trust me, this blog post is targeted towards me too), but the more we have the confidence to be ourselves, especially around others, the more others will feel inspired to be themselves.
Diving into new eras of life can be exciting if one is courageous enough to try something new.
Next time you have the urge to switch things up, don’t push that urge away; use it to create a new and improved you.
