Values are guiding lights in our lives.
Whether you notice it or not what you see as important will shape what you do and don’t do on a day-to-day basis.
If you value your health, you probably have a regular exercise routine. If you value family, you probably schedule monthly family gatherings. If you value outward markers of success, your weeks are probably centered around work and achievement.
As a minimalist and someone trying to lead a simple life, valuing experiences over acquisition is a guiding light of mine. I allow this value to guide decisions when it comes to purchasing or giving my time to certain things.
Taking stock of our values is helpful when trying to create a meaningful life. Like mentioned previously, some values fly under the radar while others are at the forefront. The key is being aware of both so that if the values that are currently guiding our lives don’t align with our intentions, then we can change them.
If you don’t know where to start when accessing your current values, try asking yourself these questions:
What do I spend most of my time doing on a daily basis? Is the way I spend my time an accurate representation of the values I want?
What do I think I value that I don’t give enough time and attention to? How can I adjust to make these values more prominent?
After writing down and answering these questions, you are one step closer to embodying your core values.
