You’ve probably read the title of this blog post and asked yourself, “what makes a brand sustainable?”
When compared to what we call “fast fashion” brands, sustainable clothing brands are the exact opposite: slow. Slow fashion brands aim to reduce their carbon footprint by harboring practices that produce quality clothing meant to last longer than a cheaply made $3.99 t-shirt.
Shopping more sustainably requires a little more forethought and investment than what many of us are used to. Instead of finding items to wear for one night, you’re shopping for items that’ll last through multiple wears.
Below are brands that are perfect for those looking for sustainable alternatives to change their wardrobes and impact the environment.
Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective specializes in activewear, stating they are like the earth’s “number one fan.”
From cute swimsuits to comfy matching sets, Girlfriend Collective offers a variety of clothing options for women and men. Each clothing item is made of 100% recycled material as well as their packaging.
I currently own two outfits from Girlfriend Collective: Black ReSet Jogger + Black ReSet Hoodie and Midnight Dylan Tank Bra + Midnight Compressive High-Rise Legging.
MATE The Label
MATE’s mission is “to provide people everywhere with essentials that are clean from seed to skin.” Eight words to describe their practices are clean, essential, organic, ethical, woman-centered, plastic free, circular, and local.
Using natural and non-toxic chemicals, MATE creates loungewear, activewear, sleepwear, plus more.
I currently own one item from MATE: organic cotton crop tee.
PrintFresh
If you’re looking for a stylish sustainably-made pajama set, PrintFresh is the place to go! PrintFresh caters to both women and men.
PrintFresh’s eco-friendly practices are outlined here. From the production to fabric to packaging, everything is intentional when it comes to creating a PrintFresh original.
I currently own one set from PrintFresh: Bagheera short sleep set (check out my review of the set here).
AKO Wear Hawaii
Local, Organic, and Earth-Friendly are words AKO Wear Hawaii uses to describe their brand. Using organic fabric, non-toxic and vegetable dyes, AKO has a selection spanning from athleticwear to loungewear for women and men.
I currently own one item from AKO: Vegetable-Dye Hemp Metal-Black Super Crop Tee.
Thrift Store(s)
The most sustainable way to shop is to wear what you have or to thrift. Thrifting allows you to give items a new life.
Whether it’s at your local Goodwill or a vintage boutique, thrift shopping is the best way to make an effort to reduce waste.
