How you start the morning sets the tone for the rest of your day.
Do you ever notice the difference between a slow, Sunday morning and a hurried, Monday morning? Usually one is nourishing, allowing you to ease into the day while the other is usually chaotic, with you rushing into the day.
Unfortunately, many of us can’t have a Sunday type of morning every day, but we can implement a few practices to slow down our mornings so that it sets the tone we want.
Here are a few of my favorite practices I have in my slow morning routine:
Making a morning cup of a warm beverage
If you’re a coffee (or tea) fan , use the time you make these beverages as a time to practice mindfulness.
I personally like a french press to make my morning coffee because it forces me to go through steps — grind coffee beans, put them in the press, boil water, pour boiled water over grinds, wait four minutes, press, then pour.
This isn’t a dig at instant coffee makers. If you have an instant coffee maker, then use that time to pause, watch, and smell the coffee brewing.
Reading and/ or journaling
If you’re barely making it out the door every morning, try waking up 30 minutes earlier so that you can create a little bit of time to read or journal.
This is a great way to wake up your brain (instead of checking socials first thing) and allows you to have some quiet time to yourself before the demands of the day steals your attention.
Yoga, meditation, walk
At this point, you’ve probably heard of the many great benefits of both yoga and meditation.
You don’t have to be a yoga prodigy or meditation guru to reap the benefits of these practices.
Taking at least 15 minutes to sit quietly, consciously breathe and stretch after a night’s sleep can do wonders.
If yoga or meditation isn’t your thing, try going for a walk to get some fresh air and get your blood pumping.
Sit and eat breakfast
It may seem silly that I put this on the list of slow morning practices, but you’d be surprised at how many people either skip breakfast or have it on the way out the door.
You don’t have to cook and eat anything extravagant to practice this. You can always make breakfast the night before to save a bit of time like overnight oats. The key to this practice is actually making time sit, eat, and enjoy your first meal of the day.
That is all the slow morning practices I have to share!
